The Open Road Blog Gas Saving Tip of the day: Safety matters. And the transportation industry sets the bar for safety standards. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) Comprehensive Safety Analysis (CSA) is proof. According to the FMCSA, 11,000+ Motor Carriers viewed CSA 2010 Safety Performance Data. To date, 11,259 unique Motor Carriers have viewed their safety data by BASIC since the site launched on April 12th. The Data Review area provides instructions on how to request FMCSA review of potentially erroneous data and, most important, guidance on how to improve compliance with safety regulations in order to increase safety on our Nation’s roads.

The state of California is a little short on dough. Citizens of the state have stomached a few years of hardships – cutbacks, furloughs, and budget crisis. While there's been some turnaround, the state's had to become a bit inventive as it tries to get back on a positive financial track. And what better way to be inventive than with advertisements. The state's promoted itself via television ads showing images of surfers, spa aficianados and a skiing governor. Billboards, online ads, and radio campaigns have all been given center stage. What's left?
Bob Pool of The Los Angeles Times reported the state's next potential advertising medium: license plates.
CASHNCA, CALI$$$, SPENDCA, NOMOTAX...
No – the state's not considering personalized license plate copy-written to promote internal initiatives. It's much more technical than that. According to the LA Times the, “state legislature is considering issuing digital license plates that would turn the back of the car into a miniature billboard,” (www.latimes.com.)
Mini billboards – six by twelve inches to be exact- could be looking back at you the next time you're stuck in traffic. An opportunity for advertisers, designers, and the tech industry? Not so fast. For those familiar with digital advertising – or most advertising channels in general – your information is as stake. License plate advertisements may be another way not just to promote a product or service, but to collect information from unknowing parties. In addition – they could also be a major distraction on the road. No one wants to be in the vicinity of a driver who's looking at everything but the road ahead.
The monetary impact though could help a state in financial need. The Times reported, “Lawmakers are being asked to launch a feasibility study to determine if the advertising revenue from millions of electronic license plates would help close the state's $19-billion deficit. In addition to being a moneymaker, the high-tech plates also could be used to streamline automobile registration procedures and to quickly tell motorists about hazardous road conditions and Amber Alerts, officials suggest,” (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2010/06/license-plate-ads.html.)

Tractor-trailers are still a common site on the road. The transportation industry relies on 16-wheelers plus a bevy of commercial-sized vehicles ready to transport goods and services across the country and even beyond its borders. While the trucking industry has taken its hits just like any other industry in the last two years, it keeps on trucking for lack of a better term. While commercial trucks are still road regulars, a different trend is appearing amongst non-commercial drivers. That trend includes two wheels or a pair of feet.
The Department of Transportation revealed new data showing that bicycling and walking are up by 25 percent. Are people being green or is it directly correlated to a difficult economy where the cost of fuel is too much for some?
According to the DOT, “data from the Federal Highway Administration’s 2009 National Household Travel Survey which shows that both bicycling and walking trips have increased by 25 percent since 2001. The FHWA funded Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center included this data in The National Bicycling and Walking Study: A 15-Year Status Report. The report details trends and changes in bicycling and walking since 1994,” (http://www.dot.gov/affairs/2010/fhwa1610.htm.)
The DOT contributes this fuel-less trend to community development among other things. Bike lanes, work-live developments, and safer environments can be attributed to the increase in foot and bicycle traffic. US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood siad, “This report demonstrates what we’ve been saying here at the Department. Americans want and need safe alternatives to driving. And by making biking and walking safer and more accessible, we’ll be able to provide Americans with more choices and help foster more active, livable communities.”
While cars and trucks aren't going anywhere, people are taking it to the street – on foot and by bicycle – one step (or pedal) at a time.

Cream or sugar? While not the most pertinent of concerns hanging over the heads of transportation industry professionals, what people consume beverage-wise on the road is of importance - both to job performance and overall health. Early mornings and long days on the job may cause one to long for a jolt of java or energy drink...or espresso, soda, smoothie, or even a shot of wheat grass. A plethora of caffeine-infused and often calorie-laden drinks are available at gas stations and convenience stores throughout the country. While taste and preference matter - it's important to know what goes into these beverages as they can affect one's performance on the road as well as overall health.
Truck drivers and anyone operating a commercial vehicle be it plane, auto, or sea vessel, has a lot to think about. What one starts the day with may not make the morning's priority list. That being said, we'll make it easy, listing morning beverages that are accessible, affordable, healthy (or at least healthier than other options) and pleasing to the pallet.
We'll start coffee. Having a cup of Joe on the road is like coming home to a grilled cheese sandwich on a rainy day. Comforting, warm, and awakening - one cup of coffee serves up 90-150 mg of caffeine. If you're trying to cut back on caffeinated beverages but appreciate the bold, classic taste of coffee - there's always decaf. If decaf's not an option - instant coffee may be. Instant coffee is making a comeback, improving in quality and taste and generally delivering a healthy dose of 60-80 mg of caffeine per cup.
For the cold-beverage aficionados, Monster energy drinks are often the go-to. A regular Monster energy drink though includes 280 calories per 16 oz. can and 622 gs of sugar. Meanwhile, a 16 oz. Monster Lo-Carb is only 20 calories, 0 g fat, and 6 g sugars.
According to Men's Health, "Fancy frozen concoctions, added flavors teeming with sugar, and super-sized receptacles all mean that the average cup o’ Joe has increased from 45 calories 20 years ago, to 330 calories today. While a McDonald's large mocha translates to 400 calories, 14 grams fat and 49 grams sugar, a large cappuccino with non-fat milk only has 180 calories and 13 grams of sugar - plus serves up a nice dose of calcium.
While water is always a good option too – there are plenty of healthy options for transportation professionals to sip while on the open road.

The Open Road Blog Gas Saving Tip of the day: Is too much ever enough? With chocolate - perhaps not. But when it comes to time spent on the road..driving...caps are a must. Driver fatigue is an ongoing concern in the transportation industry. The Truck Safety Coalition for one is pushing for a 27% reduction in daily driving time. Commercial insurance covers the transportation industry. That coverage typically extends to property, liability, and workers' compensation. Depending on the specialty of a given transportation business, insurance may be needed (or required) for garage liability, excess/umbrella liability, and more. As part of a commercial operation, many employees may not be familiar with the commercial coverages that protect the business and its employees. When it comes to personal health care coverage though - most take note regardless of the industry they're in.
Health care reform is a hot topic - especially in the transportation industry. Take truck drivers - both owner-operators, independent contractors, or employees of trucking companies, who've seen their health care premiums double and triple in recent years (much like the rest of the nation.) Affordable health care coverage is critical to an industry where revenues often go towards the fleet's health.
Despite the progress (or lack thereof depending on your position) seen in Health Reform last season, much of the hoopla and media coverage surrounding the bill has taken a back seat to environmental disasters, a toasted Greek economy, and the World Cup. Well - maybe not that last one, but a lot's been thrown at Congress and the general population in recent months.
As of today, the health bill is officially 91 days old. And three months in, President Obama met with heads of insurance companies and state insurance commissioners to basically remind them that their actions will be monitored and certain behavior is expected. That behavior can be interpreted as ‘good behavior'.
While it's up to each individual state to regulate insurance premiums, the federal government is exerting what control it can. According to the New York Times, "the White House is concerned that health insurers will blame the new law for increases in premiums that are intended to maximize profits rather than cover claims. The administration is also closely watching investigations by a number of states into the actuarial soundness of double-digit rate increases."

The Open Road Blog Gas Saving Tip of the day: The summer soltice - longer days, warmer temperatures - a new season here for the long run (until Fall anyways). Longer days though doesn't mean more hours for truck drivers. The transportation industry regulates the hours a commerical driver can operate a vehicle regardless of how balmy and sun-drenched the day. Visit the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's site for the offical rule on the length of time one can operate. Read up on the Hours-of-Service regulations (49 CFR Part 395) that places limits for when and how long commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers may drive. These regulations are based on an exhaustive scientific review and are designed to ensure truck drivers get the necessary rest to perform safe operations

The state of California is in a state of financial dissaray. Budget blunders, deficits that seem bigger than the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles combined, and Capitol converstaions that seem to go nowhere. While companies, citizens, and multiple coordinated efforts in the state of California try to return things to 'normal' - California's Department of Insurance strategizes for the future.
The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is a force in California when it comes to the economy, policy, and regulation. The CDI licenses and monitors over 1,500 insurers and more than 300,000 agents and brokers, approves insurance products before they reach the market and oversees the stability of the insurance market by carefully monitoring the fiscal health of insurers doing business here. Considering the 'state' of California's economy - everyone should have a strategy. While some may be individual, the CDI's strategy must work for the masses. That being said, the CDI released an analysis on the current economy and how its affected the department - and could affect how the department handles the state's insurance matters.
The Department opened its review of the STATE BUDGET CRISIS and the POTENTIAL IMPACT ON THE DEPARTMENT OF INSURANCE with: As the California Department of Insurance (CDI) finalizes its Strategic Plan for 2010, the State still faces unprecedented budget challenges. The Governor and Legislature are seeking to close a General Fund deficit of more than $20 billion over the next 18 months, with continued uncertainty over the impact on the Insurance Fund through which CDI is supported. This uncertainty rests on two related issues: (1) whether CDI's spending authority will be further reduced; and (2) the impact of legislative or executive action, pending litigation, and other legal or fiscal necessity on CDI's ability to maintain its current operations.
CDI is a Special Fund agency and receives no support from the General Fund. Any savings achieved by CDI must remain in the Insurance Fund and cannot be used to address the General Fund deficit. Nevertheless, in March 2009 the Governor used his line item veto to reduce CDI's spending authority by removing $17.4 million (10%) from CDI's operating budget. Because of CDI's foresight in instituting operational reviews that had already identified 10% in reductions in its discretionary budget, the impact of this initial cut was absorbable. However, the Department of Finance then further reduced CDI's operating budget by an additional $4.9 million pursuant to Control Section 3.90 of the 2009 Budget Act. Consequently, CDI's operating budget expenditure authority has been reduced by $22.3 million for FY 2009-2010, an amount lower than CDI's final budget appropriation in FY 2005-06.

There are pageants and then there are pageants. While the transportation industry may not solicit Donald Trump's expertise when it comes time for beauty pageants, it does not how to put on a show. The models - big rigs. Aerodynamic lines, shiny chrome, fine upholstery, gallery-worthy paint jobs only scratch the surface. Commercial truck shows not only highlight the physical attributes of big rigs, but their road capabilities as well. The most recent display of sixteen wheel beauty (give or take a few rims) was held last week in Virginia at Shell ROTELLA's SuperRigs truck beauty contest.
First - the buzzkill. The truck that took home the most prizes and glory was a 2004 Peterbilt 379 contaminated dirt hauler with a lime green paint job and hand-sewn upholstery.
According to Shell.com, its competition held last week, was the premier truck beauty contest for actively working trucks. Owner/Operator truckers from across the United States and Canada competed for a chance to win cash and prizes totaling $25,000.
The contaminated dirt hauler owners netted $10,000 in prize money and promotion courtesy of Shell. The winning vehicle won five categories including Best Interior, Best Theme, Best Chrome, Best Lights, Best Engine, and the biggie, Best in Show.
The win win? The show is a great promotion for the trucking industry and the transportation industry at large. Fleet owners and owner operators know full well that their trucks are far more than a vehicle - but a resource relied upon for livelihood. While commercial trucks are often recognized for their economic gains, it's icing on the cake when a wider audience sees them for their technological and aesthetic advancements.

The Open Road Blog Gas Saving Tip of the day: Driving long distance can make one famished. Anyone - whether seasoned commerical drivers in the transportation industry or a family of four taking its first treck onto the open road are familiar with the typical fast food fare that is readily available when traversing most major interstates and highways. Truck drivers though can prepare in advance - packing healthy food that's not only good for one's nutrition, but for driving performance as well. When packing in advance opt for multi-grain cereal, protein packed bars, and water in lieu of fries, burgers, and soda that's readily available at major fast food portals. Natural, unprocessed foods generally provide more nutrients than their counterparts. For those unable to pack in advance, opt for healthy options at the nearest gas station where low-calorie options are available including animal crackers, Wheat Thins, Subway sandwiches and more.

The Open Road Blog Gas Saving Tip of the day: It's no longer just a manual process - but digital too. Commercial drivers take note. The way Record of duty status (RODS) preparation is changing. Yesterday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration posted a notice of regulatory guidance for all interstate drivers of commercial motor vehicles. The FMCSA intends to change the way drivers prepare a duplicate copy of the RODS for each 24-hour period.
Now, drivers can prepare RODS via a noriginal handwritten record as well as a subsequent electronic submission to the motor carrier of a scanned image of the original record. Drivers keep the original while the FMCSA keeps the digital record.

Elections are off and running. 11 states took it to the polls today, holding votes on senate seats, gubernatorial candidates, propositions, and much more. While voters must consider the social, economic, and personal impacts of their decisions, organizations and industries can only wait for outcomes. The transportation industry is well versed in policy and regulations, especially at a state and federal level. In the past few weeks the American Trucking Association (ATA) has made its prescense known on Capitol Hill, weighing in on fuel economy and emission standards.
In May, talks at the White House were not only focused on international fares, economic woes, and oil spills, but fuel economy standards and greenhouse gas control. The ATA joined forces with President Barack Obama, signing a presidential memorandum that directs the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency to develop national standards for fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions for heavy- and medium-duty trucks.
The transportation industry has lead the way in campaigning and implementing greenhouse gas policy (in an effort to reduce greenhouse gases. ) The state of California, specifically the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have created programs to reduce truck-related emissions as well, making significant improvements in local air quality and emission-related pollution.
ATA's Sustainability Task Force, originally recommended in 2008, was sanctioned by Mr. Obama in May as well. The task force planned for the following more than two years ago:
- Federal laws requiring trucks to have speed governors set at 65 mph or below, and a national speed limit of 65 mph for all vehicles.
- Allowing more productive truck weights and combinations, which safely improve fuel economy.
- Expansion of the EPA SmartWay Transportation program, which works to reduce greenhouse gases and save fuel.
- Reducing idling by updating the interstate system and reducing traffic congestion.
- Using new technologies to reduce other engine idling.

As polls come to a close, the ATA and other transportation industry advocates continue to push for progression.

The Open Road Blog Gas Saving Tip of the day: Flucuations in the economy have been as consistent as BP's failure to stop oil from flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. The transportation industry has felt the gains - and losses - of an economy with good intentions of repairing itself yet without the resources to do so on a progressive basis. Class 8 truck sales mirror the industry's ebb and flow. According to the Trucker.com, "Class 8 truck total net orders in May were down 9.8 percent from April, coming in at 12,903 units, according to preliminary data released by FTR Associates. Although May orders slowed from the previous month, year over year comparisons show a 74.7 percent improvement over May of 2009, FTR noted."

While delving into a politically heated discussion on a first date may be deemed a faux pas, come June 8th ballot talk will be front and center. The transportation industry along with with passenger drivers throughout the state of California will decide whether or not an insurance initiative will makes its way through the ballot box.
The initiative at hand is Proposition 17, The Continuous Coverage Auto Insurance Discount Act. Proposition 17 is a measure that amends Proposition 103 to authorize the use of an additional discount on premiums for automobile insurance policies. Also known as "persistency discounts', Proposition 17 would insurance companies to absorb discounts transitioned from one good driver's carrier to the next.
According to Ballotpedia.org, "Under current law in California, an insurance company can offer a persistency discount to its own customers, but under the terms of Proposition 103, auto insurers can't offer that same discount to new customers who had continuous coverage for some period of time but from a different auto insurance company. Proposition 17 would give insurance companies the right to offer persistency discounts to customers of other insurers who have not let their policies lapse for more than 90 days in the previous five year period," (http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/Text_of_Proposition_17,_the_Continuous_Coverage_Auto_Insurance_Discount_Act_(California_2010.)
Those in favor of Proposition 17 have made their presence known via social media. Several "Yes on 17" campaigns can be found on Facebook and Twitter, providing further facts on the measure and why it should be passed.
With any politically pushed proposition though, there are opponents. Arguments against include ones that portray the proposition as one fully funded by self-serving insurance companies who - while advertising drivers will save money - opponents say that good drivers will lose out, being charged more by less accountable insurance companies should the proposition pass. Those opposed include Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, VoteVets.org, California Nurses Association, California Federation of Teachers, Consumer Watchdog, Consumer Federation of California, and the California Alliance of Retired Americans, according to www.stopprop17.org.
With any measure, research is required to get the full story. Voting on Proposition takes place in less than a week.
