Diesel prices of yesteryear left a mark. The sting of sharp rises (exceeding the four dollar per-gallon mark) in fuel prices did have a positive impact. Green technologies and fuel- efficient practices have become commonplace and fortunately, fuel prices have dropped to manageable levels. Despite the stabilization of fuel prices however, semi truck manufacturers have not taken a back seat. Take for example, Daimler Trucks North America, and their feature Innovation Truck.
According to Autoblog.com, Daimler Trucks North American recently, “release(d) its latest concept in commercial-grade hauling. The Innovation Truck concept takes the fuel-saving innovations introduced on the Freightliner Cascadia, already the most aerodynamic of the company’s trucks, and turns them up to eleven,” (www.autoblog.com).
The Innovation Truck includes such fuel-efficient improvements as rear wheel fairings, underbody panels, front air splitter, and side mirrors that are actually cameras meaning they’re small and don’t slow down the ride. And to boot, the Innovation Truck features RunSmart Predictive Cruise control…not your minvan’s cruise control. The RunSmart is a technology that evaluates the upcoming road profile more than one mile in advance and
determines the most fuel-efficient vehicle speed.
2009 fuel efficient technologies appear to be a mainstay in the transportation industry. Next up…

A new Federal incentive could boost commercial diesel hybrid sales. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently launched a program that would fund up to a quarter of the costs fleet owners pay towards replacing diesel trucks with new diesel-electric hybrid, liquefied natural gas or other alternate-fueled engine.
In addition to the financial incentive offered by the EPA, fleet owners would also reap the benefits of added fuel and energy savings. For starters, hybrid trucks recover energy using an electric motor, or even a pressurized hydraulic system, which boosts the performance of the internal combustion engine during acceleration or when carrying a heavy load.
Fleet owners know very well how much fuel is lost due to idling. An idling truck can waste nearly a gallon of fuel and hour and cause significant engine wear.
The California EPA Air and Resources Board mandates that 2008 and newer model year heavy-duty diesel engines must be equipped with a non-programmable engine shutdown system that automatically shuts down the engine after five minutes of idling or optionally meet a stringent oxides of nitrogen idling emission standard. Not only that, but the in-use truck requirements require operators of both in-state and out-of-state registered sleeper berth equipped trucks to manually shut down their engine when idling more than five minutes at any location within California. (http://www.arb.ca.gov.)
According to the EPA, the new fleet owner hybrid-incentive program can be combined with federal tax credits ranging from six to twelve thousand per vehicle. The EPA’s grants are just one of the new programs funded by the Obama administration’s economic stimulus plan.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Gas saving tweaks. Daimler Trucks North America unveiled its new fuel saving Innovation Truck at the Mid-American Trucking Show that took place in Kentucky. The tweaks you ask? Commerical trucks saw aero tweaks to rear wheel fairings, underbody panels, a roof deflector and a front air splitter. In addition cameras were used in lieu of side mirrors to reduce drag. The Innovation Truck will ultimately be able to lower its ride height using air bladders, further reducing fuel usage.

The Port of Long Beach’s Clean Trucks Program has hit an impasse. And a rather large impasse at that. On Friday, the Federal Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the American Trucking Association’s appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals that argued the POLB, “overstepped legal boundaries when they implemented the trucks plan designed to achieve environmental and safety goal,” (NRDC.org).
The clean trucks program, which began in October of last year, created several immediate mandates. Included in the program were such stipulations as trucks from 1988 and older were not permitted in the port, Then in February this year, the Port assessed a $35 fee for each twenty-foot container. Those containers larger than 20 feet were assessed a $70 fee. These fees went towards a fund that would provide truck owners the means to replace their vehicles, with newer, cleaner burning trucks.
The Court of Appeals stated, “In short, motor carriers should not be required to adhere to the various unconstitutional provisions in the Ports’ (concession) agreements, and are likely to suffer irrevocably if forced to do that or give up their businesses.” (www.ttnews.com)
To the ATA, the appeal was not environmental, but regulatory. ATA’s chief counsel Robert Digges reported, “The judges understood that most of the elements of the plans are not about safety, but rather are a regulatory effort by the ports to create what they believe would be a more efficient drayage system,” (www.truckline.com).
The Court’s decision weighs heavily on the minds of environmental organizations. For example, the NRDCs Southern California Clean Air Program is affected by the decision.
The NRDC feels the Port’s business as well as the health of the surrounding communities is at jeopardy should the program come to an end.
In response to the news, the Port’s Executive Director Richard D. Steinke said, “The decision today does not change the legal status of our Clean Trucks Program or any other requirements currently in effect at the Port. The Port will continue to study the decision and appropriate next steps of the Court of Appeals, and anticipates that further proceedings will be held promptly before the District Court, “(www.polb.com)

News lately? Not so good. The stock market’s up and down, manufacturing has dropped and jobs are disappearing left and right. Stimulus money has been pumped into the economy but with little to show other than misuse by Wall Street heads. Where’s all the good news these days? For those in the transportation industry, you don’t have to look to far.
The American Trucking Association released a report this past Monday highlighting the long-term outlook of freight transportation services. The report, titled ATA U.S. Freight Transportation Forecast to 2020, forecasts, “that by 2020 total freight tonnage will grow more than 26 percent and total freight transportation revenue will grow 68 percent.”
While current times don’t project a similar optimism due to a downturn in manufacturing, retail, and risky international economies, there’s hope for the future.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics has a similar outlook to the ATA.
“Overall job opportunities should be favorable for truck drivers, although opportunities may vary greatly in terms of earnings, weekly work hours, number of nights spent on the road, and quality of equipment. Competition is expected for jobs offering the highest earnings or most favorable work schedules. Average growth is expected.
Employment change. Overall employment of truck drivers and driver/sales workers is expected to increase by 8 percent over the 2006-16 decade, which is about as fast as the average for all occupations, due to growth in the economy and in the amount of freight carried by truck. Because it is such a large occupation, truck drivers will have a very large number of new jobs arise, over 258,000 over the 2006-16 period,” (http://www.bls.gov.)
So – if you can endure the short-term and keep a positive long-term perspective – you’re sitting in a good seat.

What a drag. Big rigs are big for a reason, however their size and shape combined with speed are not always symbiotic with airflow. Drag is the thwarting force that slows down semi trucks and saps fuel. Trucks use more than 35 billion gallons of diesel each year.
The big rig’s square shape reacts with airflow as it tries to move across the edges, but instead forms a vortex that fights forward movement, resulting in an invisible resistance.
Just like a person trying to run in water, the resistance burns more energy, and in the rig’s case – fuel.
The US Department of Energy have sponsored research focused on improving big rig fuel consumption. Researchers at the Georgia Tech Research Institute went face to face with that very vortex in an attempt to improve a truck’s fuel efficiency.
Georgia Tech engineer, Robert Englar, M.S.A.E., said, “If I can improve the drag coefficient of a tractor trailer, I can increase its fuel efficiency or make it get more miles per gallon,” (www.smarttech.gatech.edu.)
Just how can a vortex be battled? Using the truck’s original structure, Englar retrofitted the back of the vehicle with small round panels. These panels are able to redirect the airflow by using compressed air that changes the direction of the hindering air so it works with the truck’s forward movement, ultimately causing less drag. The test resulted in a 32 percent improvement in fuel usage.
If this vortex-opposing technology was applied to all 18-wheelers in the country, as much as 2.4 million gallons of diesel could be conserved a year.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Love your semi truck? It is the most loving day of the year - at least in Hallmark’s eyes - so why not extend a little love to your 16-wheeler? How about oil changes, air filter changes, and inlfated tires to start. Go the distance with environmentally sound and gas saving improvements.

Cross-border trucking has seen its federal funds run dry. After President Obama and Congress spent weeks deliberating over the Fed’s 2009 budget - thousands of earmarks and billions of dollars - a funding freeze was placed on several programs including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The Bush Administration originally enacted the cross-border plan, which opened highways to Mexican trucks.
The U.S. Department of Transportation issued a statement following the signing of the bill indicating the administration would comply with the shutdown of the current program, but would look at options in the future.
The initiative wasn’t supported by all including Transportation Secretary Mary Peters. Secretary Peters said, “a broad coalition of more than 69 U.S. companies and agricultural and business organizations support the project because of the benefits it provides to U.S. exporters who every year ship billions worth of products and produce into Mexico. Should Congress choose to end the project, Mexico has the right under the rules of NAFTA to impose fees and tariffs on U.S. goods that would surely result in lost business and lost jobs,” (www.dot.gov.)
There are several arguments for both sides of the program. Those for claim the cross border program creates and sustains several US jobs, especially those that in the agricultural industry. Those against state that it’s unfair based on the fact US trucks aren’t granted the same access to Mexico and are not benefiting from the $260 billion the program brings in a year. There are also security issues brought up time and time again, although none that have been officially confirmed as identifiable threats.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: It’s all in the bumper, baby. At least fuel savings are! Scientists at Georgia tech found that by changing the way air flows around the truck’s rear if you will, will create less drag and reduce the amount of fuel used. The solution - configure curved bumpers on the rear and connect each to a blower that pushes air through them and out the side of the rig. The objective is to reduce the overall drag and move the big rig forward. How much fuel can this save? Potentiall 12%!

TWIC Deadline Rapidly Approaching — April 14
More marine transportation workers need to apply
Important update for all longshore workers, truck drivers, repair people and other positions that require a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). April 14th is the deadline to have a TWIC, which is essentially the verification needed to access marine terminals. The Port of Long Beach placed the notice on its web site, while detailed information can be found with the Transportation Security Administration.
For those who work at the Port of Long Beach and who haven’t applied, you can
call the TWIC program help desk at 1-866-DHS-TWIC (1-866-347-8942) or enroll at the following centers:
- 301 E. Ocean Blvd., Suite 500, Long Beach, CA 90802
- 1001 New Dock St., San Pedro, CA 90731 (on Terminal Island)
What’s the importance behind the TWIC? According to the TSA, “The Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is a vital security measure that will ensure individuals who pose a threat do not gain unescorted access to secure areas of the nation’s maritime transportation system.” (www.tsa.gov.)
More than one million employees who access American ports will be required to provide a TWIC. If you think you’re in need of one, contact one of the above addresses provided by the Port and apply today.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: If Wal-Mart’s doing it…Doubling fuel economy. Wishful thinking or a realistic strategy? Wal-Mart’s fuel saving plans include heavy duty trucks that don’t get six miles a gallon anymore, but thirteen! If this happens, more than 25 billion pounds of carbon dioxide will be prevented from entering the air by 2020. The plan is to incorporate a fleet of trucks with improved aerodynamics, transmissions and tires.

What’s the best thing about being a truck driver? Driving cross country or even state, witnessing rolling hills, cascading valleys, and thunderous mountains first hand? Or perhaps the gentle lull of solitude combined with fresh air and land untouched by man? Sometimes – it’s just having a sandwiched named after your profession.
A trucker’s sandwich? Sure! Sometimes the best part about driving is stopping to eat. Driving hundreds of miles at a time can leave one hungry for good, satiating comfort food. There aren’t too many positions where you can get food that’s specially made for – you. Take for example a writer….there’s no writer’s ‘coffee’, or doctor’s special side salad. If you’re a trucker though – there’s a lot out there and just for you.
Take for example the ‘Trucker’s Sandwich’ at Holland’s Burgers located in Victorville, California. Known as the “diamond in the Ruff” off Highway 66, Holland’s serves up a Truckers Sandwich complete with roast beef, bacon, and more.
At a little truck stop in Plainfield New Jersey called Nanny’s Kitchen, Grease Truck sandwiches are one of the most popular menu items.
In the mood for options? Truck drivers are catered to U.S. are Flying J, Petro, Pilot, and TA, which offer buffet and menu dining. A number of truck stops including All American Plaza and Loves pitch their customer service and quality food.
Ask any truck driver about his or her favorite foody spot and you’re sure to get a quick- and firm – answer. Food is personal as it is, and when good meals are potentially few and far between (and hundreds of miles a part) – you’re sure to stick with your favorites. And for truck drivers, those favorites are just as likely to stick with them.
