RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Since seventy five percent of a vehicle’s fuel consumption is weight-based. Over the past decade and even more - strides have been made in design technology that improve not only the structure, but its fuel efficiency. Take for example composite trailers which use vacuum infusion and pultrusion processes. The lighter weight material is structurally stronger and can reduce fuel consumption by as much as twenty percent on a 32.8 foot trailer.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Turbo conjures lots of - power. Turbojets, turboprop, turbocharger…all fast, strong, with kick to boot. Turbo doesn’t always come to mind when we think of gas saving technology however. Turbocompounding though - is an efficiency-boosting technology that converts waste heat into mechanical power. Large trucks have used turbocompounding to increase power output by as much as 5 percent. Even better - it can save an equal amount of fuel.

Port of Long Beach Clean Trucks Program - Stalled?

Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Submit to Reddit reddit

Out with the old and in with the new? Not so fast – at the Port of Long Beach (POLB). Pollution is still a problem, and the POLB officials are still at odds over truck drivers still driving in older vehicles.
On February 19th, the POLB intended to vote on how to handle the pollution caused by the 16,000-plus truck drivers that work the port.

The original plan – replace the older trucks that contributed to the most pollution. The problem? There’s too many. According to the Los Angeles Times, “In a move that disappointed environmentalists and Los Angeles port officials, the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on Friday released a plan to slash truck-related diesel pollution that would allow trucking companies to use employee drivers, independent contractor drivers or a combination – as they do now.” (www.latimes.com)

Officials encountered such issues as costs related to replacing vehicles (which can run as much as $150,000) as well as the concern that those vehicles rejected from the port will continue to to operate, spreading their pollution elsewhere.

Stimulus Plans and the DOT

Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Submit to Reddit reddit

With version 2.0 of the stimulus plan in place (or at least approved), the attention is now focused on where those hundreds of billions of dollars will be focused. The Department of Transportation (DOT) will be given a healthy portion. Reports indicate as much as $90 billion will go towards our nation’s infrastructure.
The DOT will be able to repave highways in dire need of a facelift, replace waterlines, and reinforce bridges that have struggled to endure the test of time and bigger and bigger vehicles. Highways repaved for the first time in decades. Century-old waterlines dug up and replaced with new pipes. In addition – these improvements are intended to create jobs as well.

This past week, DOT head, Ray LaHood met with state leadership to discuss the plan. The details were reported in his blog: “I talked with every state represented at the meeting and learned about challenges and projects in their states.
A key component of the plan is enacting the largest investment in America’s roads, bridges, transit lines and rail systems since the creation of the interstate highway system.

The one-time addition of over $48 billion directed towards transportation currently under consideration by the Congress would be a welcome supplement, and we estimate the economic recovery funding will support the improvement of more than 2,000 bridges and the rehabilitation of more than 25,000 miles of highway nationwide.” (www.dot.gov).

In addition to transportation - energy, education, health insurance, and debt to name a few are in the running for government funds, meaning it’s going to take time and a lot of back and forth before it’s decided where the monies will be distributed.

Truck Love

Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Submit to Reddit reddit

Valentine’s Day weekend is made for expressing love to those you, well, love. “Those” often include spouses, significant others, family, friends, and even Fido. If you’re a truck driver though – much of your day and year is spend on the road alone. For example, if you refer to the 16-wheeler as “she”, or perhaps even given it a name. It’s not uncommon to have somewhat of an emotional attachment to a vehicle and given the thought – wouldn’t it be nice to show your truck a little love this Valentine’s?

It’s in the details

Accessories and Valentine’s Day go hand in hand. While common gifts may include necklaces and diamond bracelets, what about chrome accents? Chrome can make a big rig shine like no other on the road. If you’re in the market for chrome additions, check out catalogs, web sites, and companies you’ve worked with before to make sure you’re getting quality chrome that will really make your rig’ stand out whether it’s the bumper or fenders on the drive axles. Start from the top and add chrome to the stacks, or a dash on the tractor lights. Just like a diamond – it doesn’t matter where it is – it’s eye catching and adds a luxurious touch.

Improving the Inside

A semi-truck can look like a thousand bucks (or realistically – hundreds of thousands of bucks) from the outside, while the inside is in shambles. Considering, as the driver, you’re inside the truck a majority of your workday, why not add a few touches that are good for the truck, and you. Seat enhancements (lumbar support), and new sounds systems can make the ride that much more enjoyable and give your rig a modern look. Replace lighting with interesting pieces that cast a glow on that’s comfortable, and helps your visions as well.

When Love Transcends the Truck

Not all improvements have to be cosmetic. Maybe this Valentine’s is the right time to make technological enhancements that are good for the semi and the environment. Take for example, the EPA estimates that a typical long haul truck could save more than $2,000 per year by installing aerodynamic fairings on to trailers which improve fuel efficiency by 5 percent.

No matter how you show it this Valentine’s weekend - make sure your big rig gets a little love.

Who’s Riding with You? Guest Passenger Liability and Your Risk

Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Submit to Reddit reddit

Who’s riding in your truck? Guest passenger liability is an important subject as it places significant risk on the motor carrier and even the drive in the event of an accident.

The FMCSA mandates the following rule regarding guest passengers: (a) Unless specifically authorized in writing to do so by the motor carrier under whose authority the commercial motor vehicle is being operated, no driver shall transport any person or permit any person to be transported on any commercial motor vehicle other than a bus.

Those allowed to ride as an authorized passenger must be documented by name, destination and the times in which he or she was transported. The only time a passenger does not require pre-authorization is if he or she is an employee or other persons assigned to a commercial motor vehicle by a motor carrier or a person being transported due to a medical injury.

From a liability standpoint this documentation – and compliance – can greatly reduce risk and costly claims.

While many guest passenger liability claims often include spouses, kids, and friends – it’s important to inspect a tractor trailer for stowaways or the unknown passenger. If you subscribe to RSI’s Transportation Times, you may have picked up driver stipulations as well.

In order to transport authorized guests:
• Drivers must be employed by the truck line for 90 days or more
• Have no accidents in the last two years
• Have no more than two moving violations in the last three years

No matter how safe the driver – an unauthorized passenger is an automatic risk, and not one worth taking.

Design on Wheels

Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon | Submit to Reddit reddit

What does it take to stand out on the road these days? A clean trailer is nice - but a clean trailer plus sharp design features is a site to be seen.

Take for example the Lonestar – the 1930’s inspired truck that sports curves eye-catching accents rarely seen on the road. Don’t have it in your budget to purchase an entirely new vehicle then consider trailer decals. Customizable and quick to install, packages often include four-color, ready-to-apply reflective images and long term warranties.

Sometimes it’s what’s on the inside that counts.

Eschewing any design to the exterior of a big rig, many focus their design sites on the interior. Long hours on the road may be more enjoyable when the cabin features plush interiors with touches of chrome and wood paneling. These designs don’t come cheap though and can cost tens of thousands of dollars when all said and done.

And it’s not always about looks.

A trailer’s design can lead to a safer experience for all on the road. The American Auto Association reported, “According to the Foundation study, the addition of popular after-market products such as fender, brush or flap systems to tractor-trailers does not significantly reduce spray by large trucks in wet weather. However, the improved vehicle aerodynamics of newer tractor-trailer models does significantly reduce the amount of spray generated, according to the study, which was funded by the AAA Foundation and conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute,” (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0EIN/is_2003_Oct_23/ai_109159544.)

Louise Nevelson said, “Art is everywhere, except it has to pass through a creative mind.” Then the open road is a canvas.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Technology is good (especially for stocks today) and can reduce fuel prices, lower emissions and so on and so on. The cost though? Steep. The cost saving benefits can often take years to see. Smaller fleets are especially affected by government mandates to update a truck’s technology. The happy medium? Slowly introduce the changes and adopt other cost-saving strategies in the meantime.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Full throttle. Fun - yes, good for gas mileage - nope! When taking off - think not like a jet with noise abatement requirements, but a barge making its way through a tight canal. The analogy may be off - but the point is - start slow the first couple miles to avoid burning wasted fuel.

President Barack Obama is official and and his transportation agenda is in place - or at least updated on the new and imporved www.whitehouse.gov web site. While the new administration has already made quick fixes with lasting impact - the first month of the new year has not seen any change in the transportation inudstry. There’s no doubt though that roads, oil, jobs, and the environment will play key roles in President Obama’s first term as President. The following outlines his written agenda:

ENERGY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The energy challenges our country faces are severe and have gone unaddressed for far too long. Our addiction to foreign oil doesn’t just undermine our national security and wreak havoc on our environment — it cripples our economy and strains the budgets of working families all across America. President Obama and Vice President Biden have a comprehensive plan to invest in alternative and renewable energy, end our addiction to foreign oil, address the global climate crisis and create millions of new jobs.
The Obama-Biden comprehensive New Energy for America plan will:
Help create five million new jobs by strategically investing $150 billion over the next ten years to catalyze private efforts to build a clean energy future.

Within 10 years save more oil than we currently import from the Middle East and Venezuela combined.
Put 1 million Plug-In Hybrid cars — cars that can get up to 150 miles per gallon — on the road by 2015, cars that we will work to make sure are built here in America.

Swap Oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to Cut Prices.
Eliminate Our Current Imports from the Middle East and Venezuela within 10 Years
Increase Fuel Economy Standards.
Get 1 Million Plug-In Hybrid Cars on the Road by 2015.
Create a New $7,000 Tax Credit for Purchasing Advanced Vehicles.
Establish a National Low Carbon Fuel Standard.
A “Use it or Lose It” Approach to Existing Oil and Gas Leases.
Promote the Responsible Domestic Production of Oil and Natural Gas.

Create Millions of New Green Jobs

Ensure 10 percent of Our Electricity Comes from Renewable Sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025.
Deploy the Cheapest, Cleanest, Fastest Energy Source – Energy Efficiency.
Weatherize One Million Homes Annually.
Develop and Deploy Clean Coal Technology.
Prioritize the Construction of the Alaska Natural Gas Pipeline.
Reduce our Greenhouse Gas Emissions 80 Percent by 2050
Implement an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent by 2050.
Make the U.S. a Leader on Climate Change.

Transportation

As our society becomes more mobile and interconnected, the need for 21st-century transportation networks has never been greater. However, too many of our nation’s railways, highways, bridges, airports, and neighborhood streets are slowly decaying due to lack of investment and strategic long-term planning. President Obama and Vice President Biden believe that America’s long-term competitiveness depends on the stability of our critical infrastructure. They will make strengthening our transportation systems, including our roads and bridges, a top priority.
