RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: NYE 2008 is a day to celebrate, but more importantly, be safe. If you’re driving a truck or have one on the road tonight, consider these safety factors: If you can, utilize a fleet monitoring GPS, stay in the slow lane, keep nerves in check (unfortunately there will be crazy drivers out there tonight), check all fluids and hoses, and check for any leaks or problems. Also - double check tires to make sure they’re in proper condition.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Need a New Year’s Resolution? How about doing something smart? According to the EPA, something smart would be adding a U.S. EPA Certified SmartWay tractors and trailers to your fleet. According to the EPA, a “smart” tractor and trailer is outfitted at with equipment that significantly reduces fuel use and emissions, and can even save up to $11,000 a year. Now that’s smart!

Change is just around the corner – what with the New Year, new president, and as those in the transportation industry know – a new secretary of Transportation. In a little over three weeks President-elect Barack Obama and his staff including Congressman and soon to be Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood will officially take office and kick-start the administration’s run.
As Secretary of Transportation – congressman LaHood has the following job responsibilities:
· Oversee the formulation of national transportation policy and promotes intermodal transportation.
· Negotiate and implement international transportation agreements
· Manage the state of US Airlines
· Issue regulations to prevent alcohol and illegal drug misuse in transportation systems
· Prepare transportation legislature
Not an easy job, but somebody’s got to do it.
Current Secretary of Transportation, Mary E. Peters had the following words to say about her replacement, “Congressman LaHood’s broad experience and well-known pragmatism make him an excellent choice to lead and support America’s transportation future. There will be challenges, but there are also incredible opportunities to continue work to improve transportation safety, tackle congestion and promote mobility, expand global transportation opportunities, rebuild transportation systems after disasters, and continue fundamental transportation reform.” (dot.gov)
LaHood’s most prominent responsibility will start with the new administration’s public works projects - designed to stimulate the struggling economy. The plan is based on government controlled industrial policies that will repair roads and bridges and create jobs in technology.

Seems like the snow just won’t stop. Everywhere you look be it the Grapevine that lies just North of Los Angeles, the Rockies, or low-lying Midwest, highways are covered in ice and snow making it dificult for truck drivers to get to where they need to go. While the weather is left to Mother Nature, there are a bevvy of tips out there just for truck drivers dealing with snowy conditions.
Preparedness is Key
Safety first - you’ve heard it all along from teachers, parents, and the person on the other end of the CB. Truck maintenance is extremely important. Check fluids including oil and make sure hoses can withstand the season ahead. Ensure the biggies like tires and brakes are in tip top shape as a blow out or inability to stop on an icy road is a situation we must all try to avoid at all costs.
Drivers need to make sure they’re in tip top shape as well. While this doesn’t mean you have to run a mile under 8 minutes, it does mean you’re well rested and healthy enough to travel long distances and remain alert the entire time you’re schedule to drive.
The Long Road Ahead
Encountering bad weather while on the road should be expected this time of year. Safety equipment is essential and should inclue an emergency kit. Working flashlights, hazard displays, and extra food and water are just a few of the things truck drivers should take stay safe.
When driving in snow, slow and steady won’t win the race, but getting safetly to your destination is more important anyway. Use a GPS if able and frequently listen to updates regarding weather and roads.
Snow and ice can accumulate on top of trailers and present a danger on the road many are not aware of. Large chunks of ice and snow that fly off the tops of cars and trailers can hit other cars on the road, or even pedestrians. Take a look while at the staging area of a lot or whenever stopped and use a long soft brush if you have one to wipe the snow off. It’s not a good idea to climb up on top of the trailer as it’ll be icy, making it easy to slip and fall. If you don’t have a long brush, use two poles or similar devices (even tree branches) to get the snow off.
The Others
It’s just as important for passengers to know how to share snowy roads with semi-trucks. Slow down is the most repeated piece of advice, yet it never seems have a universal appeal. Drivers are also warned not to flash their lights at big rigs as doing so will reflect across as many as four different mirrors making it difficult for the truck driver to see.
It’s predicted that this winter will be a cold one all across the country. Knowing the road conditions ahead of time, and being prepared for the worst kind of weather will not make life a cup of hot cocoa, but will put you on the right track to safety.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: As the holiday approaches thoughts may have drifted from gas prices and onto what gifts you can purchase last minute. While it would be nice if Santa brought even lower diesel prices (under $1.00!!) however, there are other, easier to get gifts that will make the truck driver in your life smile. How about a XM radio subscription or GPS system. The sun’s glare can be tough on the long hauls and a sturdy pair of sunglasses with UVB protection would be useful and fun. Homemade gifts are always appreciated as well whether in the form of cookies or a quilt for those chilly nights.

Another week – another bailout. This time around, President Bush allocated billions of dollars to the auto industry in a move designed to save the fragile giants, GM and Chrysler. The fear that should these two industry icons go under could lead to devestating economic consquences throughout the country. The emergency government loan will provide $13.4 billion dollars to to both GM and Chrysler over the next three months in an effort to prevent both companies from bankruptcy.
Straight from the source:
“There is too great a risk that bankruptcy now would lead to a disorderly collapse of the auto companies,” Bush said. “My economic advisors believe that would deal an unacceptably painful blow to hardworking Americans far beyond the auto industry . . . and send our suffering economy into a deeper and longer recession,” (www.latimes.com.)
The breakdown:
The math goes as follows: Approximately $13.4 billion will be accessible starting January. Of that, $9.4 billion is allotted to General Motors Corp. while $4 billion goes to Chrysler LLC.
According to the Associated Press, GM and Chrysler are required to give the government stock warrants, which would allow it to purchase GM and Chrysler stock at a specified price. Executive extras like jets and giant bonuses will be no more.
Altenative notions:
While the bailout money is still in the Fed’s pockets, there have been recommendations concerning alternative ways of utilzing the monies including putting it towards green technologies. The auto manufactuers’ first plan of attack however is to pay the bills according to most reports. GM and Chrysler have ties throughout the World’s economy and are the financial foundation for thousands and thousands for individuals. The coming months (and new year) will bring what we hope as taxpayers are transparent, positive changes.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: What’s the reason for stoppage in diesel price decrease and the rapid rise? Well - not rapid so to speak, but at least a couple of cents. Blame it on the rain - or snow - depending on where you’re at (or the route itself). Frozen roads means frozen traffic. Lack of demand can lead to what we’re seeing as a slight rise in fuel prices. Wait for the thaw - it’ll happen!

Cheers to cleaner air. This week, the state of California passed two landmark rules that will curb the amount of exhaust that comes from diesel trucks. The heavy-duty ones that is. It’s a significant step for the state, who’s Air Resources Board believes this measure will prevent over 9,000 “premature” deaths and ultimately make the air we breath cleaner for you, I, and future generations to come.
The Sacramento Lowdown:
According to the ARB’s Tuesday press release that reported the regulations were passed and, “directly aimed at cleaning up harmful emissions from the estimated one million heavy-duty diesel trucks that operate in California. Beginning January 1, 2011, the Statewide Truck and Bus rule will require truck owners to install diesel exhaust filters on their rigs, with nearly all vehicles upgraded by 2014. Owners must also replace engines older than the 2010 model year according to a staggered implementation schedule that extends from 2012 to 2022.”
To Retrofit or Replace – that is the question.
Both options are expensive, which is most likely to be deciding factor at hand.
According to a Los Angeles Times report, “The new rules, would cover any trucks weighing more than 14,000 pounds that travel through California, no matter where they are registered. Owners would be required to retrofit about 230,000 heavy-duty rigs with diesel exhaust traps and replace about 350,000 older, dirty engines by 2023.” The cost of retrofitting depends on the part, but can often range from $1,500 up to $12,000 per upgrade. If you’re a fleet owner with two hundred trucks, that can add up fast and hurt the margins even quicker. The state however is serving up more than one billion dollars in funding aid – how’s that for a stimulus boost?

The big rigs get all the attention. Diagnostic testing, valve cleansing, tire dressings, and regular check ups. What about the health of the person who steers the wheel? Truck drivers already have one strike against their health - sitting for long periods of time, mostly likely alone. Fortunately, there are several resources available to drivers with information on how to stay fit, eat right, and maintain optimal health even during the longest of hauls.
Fast food = sometimes the only option.
We’re not here to denounce the drive thru, but rather recommend better choices. Chicken is lower in fat, calories, and cholesterol, especially when charbroiled than say a beef burger or taco. Salads? Think twice - packaged dressing can easily add enough calories to surpass the total amount found in a value meal. Taste is important, but so is nutrition. Considering your options, and taking a glance at the joint’s nutritional information (it’s there) will help you chose the healthier menu item.
Get in Shape.
Sitting for hours and hours makes it difficult to reach one’s cardiovascular potential. Freeman Health Systems suggests the following exercises that truck drivers can take with while on the road:
· Choose activities you enjoy. If you can’t find a place outdoors to walk, stash a few weights in your truck and work out in the cab.
· Carry a jump rope with you. It takes up little space and can be done almost everywhere.
· Make your workout a habit you do daily, or every other day.
· Play music to keep you entertained as you work out.
Stress Free Driving
Road rage gets the best of us. For professional drivers though, deal with dufus drivers is day to day. Letting one’s blood boil though is not good for the heart, and therefore must be controlled. While meditating at the wheel is not feasible, open road can be good for the pysche. Chances are there’s a rolling valley, nostalgic fruit stand, horse farm, or majestic mountain range that can hit like a ton of bricks - in a good way. Make a mental note of the markers that have a positive mental impact and inspire good thoughts. Simple breathing habits - taking long deep breaths through the nose and exhaling through the mouth - have immediate calming effects and are always accessible at a moment’s notice.
Life on the road isn’t easy, but maintaining good health can make driving short and long hauls more enjoyable as well as the world beyond the big rig.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Sometimes it’s not always about fuel efficiency, but driver efficiency. With the holidays in mind, think of a gift to give the truck driver in your ife that will make his or her rid that much more - well - efficient. And enjoyable too. Consider a coffee mug/maker all in one or ultra comfy seat covers. Make a mix of tunes to make the long-haul enjoyable (and of course ones that won’t interfere with the CB). Trailer accessories in chrome or even a new GPS gadget. There are several gift options that will surprise and be effective on the road.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Making 360 changes for the better. That’s what Wall-Mart is attempting to do. Wall-Mart implemented Wal-Mart,announced that it would launch an environmental plan to reduce the company’s environmental footprint. It’s called: “Sustainability 360″. One step in the process involves Peterbilt. Wall-Mart, which uses Peterbilt trucks to transport products cross country, is working on creating a fleet of hybrid Peterbilt trucks that are set to hit the roads in 2009.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Liquid efficiency. Beyond the type of fuel used for a semi truck engine, the other fluids that keep the truck moving are just as important, down to the type of windshield wiper fluid. Before winter officially kicks in, review the semi’s individual maintenance requirements and make sure the correct type of fluid is used where necessary.

Christmas trees are synonymous with, well, Christmas. And some time between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people made a mad dash to Christmas three farms all over the country. While the scents of fresh pine and noble are sure to trigger merry memories, there’s something else to consider when looking at each prestigous perennial: how did they get there?
“They” is in reference to the 25 million-plus Christmas trees that are transported all across the continent each year around this time. Consider the following courtesy of the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, National Christmas Tree Association:
· There are approximately 25-30 million Real Christmas Trees sold in the U.S. every year.
· There are close to half a billion Real Christmas Trees currently growing on Christmas Tree farms in the U.S. alone, all planted by farmers
· There are about 21,000 Christmas Tree growers in the U.S., and over 100,000 people employed full or part-time in the industry
While trees are now most likely to be transported by tractor-trailers, that wasn’t always the case. During the early 1900s, trees were transported by ships, not trucks, that would cross such areas as Lake Michigan, “hauling Christmas trees from Michigan ports to coastal cities in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois,” (http://bayviewcompass.com/bay-views-christmas-tree-ships/.) Customers would go directly to the docks to buy trees.
Now, it’s more common that nurseries will produce Christmas trees, selling both the seedlings or the full grown crop. One such nursery is Smith Evergreen Nursery in Magnolia, Ohio. Smith Evergreen will transport trees in bulk twice a year, once in the Spring, and then again the Fall. And Christmas trees don’t come cheap. A full grown 10 foot tall Douglas Fir costs roughly $41.00. To ship it freight will run as high as $1.40 a tree depending on the zone. Smith Evergreen can transport about 750 trees per semi truck, or 230 individually tied trees on their straight trucks. .
In other situations, Christmas trees arrive as special deliveries via FedEx Special Delivery trailers. One such scenario occurred in Oregon, where 19 growers donated 2,500 trees that FedEx shipped in conjunction with the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, which sends Christmas trees to U.S. military troops around the world.
Whether they arrive still covered in snow, or tightly packaged like a present, the safe delivery of each Christmas tree is dependent on successful transportation.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: We all know a healthy vehicle is important and can save in fuel costs as well as other maintenance related costs. But what about healthy drivers? Long hauls can lead to excessive eating and limit the amount of time available for exercise. Professionanl drivers though now have health advocates. The site, www.fitnessroad.com/, is an online resource that provides information as to how drivers can stay healthy while on the road. Everything from nutritious recipes, stress reduction, and exercise tips are tailored for the trucker and available through the site.

Thanksgiving has come and gone, holiday shopping is in full swing, and oil prices continue to drop. And during the first week of the 2008 holiday season, the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) met on Saturday, November 29th to discuss the industry’s current state of affairs – mainly production cuts. Despite reports of a reduction in oil production, fuel prices – including diesel – continue to drop.
Today, TheTrucker.com reported, “The weekly retail on-highway diesel price today fell another $0.049 per gallon to $2.615 which reflects a price of $0.801 per gallon less than the same week one year ago.” The drop in prices was not expected even considering the barrel trends from the last couple months. According to the Associated Press, stagnant economic conditions in the U.S. have contributed to falling prices, “Grim economic data this week pointing to a severe recession in the U.S. in the fourth quarter and signs of growth slowing around the world have kept prices from rebounding further,” (http://www.thetrucker.com/News/Stories/2008/11/28/OilslumpsaheadofOPECmeeting.aspx .)
OPEC is set to meet again for its regularly scheduled meeting on December 17th in Algeria. Attendees of last week’s meeting did express the need for production cuts before the focal December meeting, however, no decisions were officially made. The back and forth dialogue has lead some industry analysts to believe the group is not up to par in it’s ability to make the right decisions. Money.cnn.com interviewed managing director of oil and gas research at Oppenheimer & Co. in New York, Fadel Gheit, who stated, “There is total confusion” among OPEC’s 13 members. These people really have no business model. They basically thrive when oil prices go up, and now they are crying uncle when prices go down,” (http://money.cnn.com/2008/11/28/news/international/opec.ap/index.htm).
