RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: What’s hundreds of billions of dollars have to do with the transportation industry? A lot! Just yesterday, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill of 2009 was approved by congress and now sits in the hands of the Senate. The nuts and bolts of the package are tailored to create and save 3 to 4 million jobs, jumpstart our economy, and begin the process of transforming it for the 21st century with $275 billion in economic recovery tax cuts and $550 billion in what’s being called “thoughtful and carefully targeted priority investments with unprecedented accountability measures built in,” (www.appropriations.house.gov.) Directly impacting the transportation industry are:
• Clean, Efficient, American Energy
• Transforming our Economy with Science and Technology
• Modernizing Roads, Bridges, Transit and Waterways
• Tax Cuts to Make Work Pay and Create Jobs
• Lowering Healthcare Costs
• Helping Workers Hurt by the Economy
• Saving Public Sector Jobs and Protect Vital Services
(7 out of 8 isn’t bad!)

This past week we not only welcomed in a new president, but a new head to the Deparment of Transportation (DOT). Ray LaHood was official as of Friday, January 23rd and A far cry from his prior stint as a social science teacher, LaHood is set to tackle the public works program set in place by the new administration in addition to overseeing the department’s mission to, “Serve the United States by ensuring a fast, safe, efficient, accessible and convenient transportation system that meets our vital national interests and enhances the quality of life of the American people, today and into the future,” (http://www.dot.gov/about_dot.html#whatwedo.)
A little bit of background….
A representative from Illinois who was born in Peoria, Peoria County, Ill., December 6, 1945 - LaHood graduated from Spalding High School, Chicago, Ill. and attended Spoon River Community College, Canton, Ill. and eventually earned his B.S. at Bradley University.
In 1971, LaHood began work as a teacher and then moved on to a director position in Rock Island County with the Youth Services Bureau. From 1972-1974 LaHood served as chief planner in the Bi-States Metropolitan Planning Commission beginning his work in the political realm. The next two years brough work as aide to United States Representative Thomas F. Railsback of Illinois. The DOT provides a snapshot of the rest: 1977-1982; member of the Illinois state house of representatives, 1982-1983; aide to United States Representative Robert H. Michel of Illinois, 1983-1994; elected as a Republican to the One Hundred Fourth and to the six succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1995-January 3, 2009); was not a candidate for reelection to the One Hundred Eleventh Congress in 2008.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Zig zags. You must be tired of it! Zig zagged statistics is what reporters, analysts and anyone involved in oil are using to describe pricing patterns. You’ll notice Southland numbers dipped slightly today (vs. the day before) - however some parts of the country saw a 5 percent increase. Overall, the prices of oil went up 6 percent although the amoutn of unused oil in the US continues to grow. While severe winter weather can bring a spike in prices, the real fear is summer heat. Analysts say it’s too soon to tell how oil will be priced over the next two seasons, but a severe spike is no where in site. The Associated Press reported, “Crude prices have tumbled since the beginning of the year with global demand for energy falling. On Tuesday, the February contract closed below $40, the second consecutive month it has done so,” (www.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12400801/.)

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: While things were sure heating up today in D.C. - not the frigid inaguration temperatures, but the million-plus bodies packed in the Mall like sardines - thing have been pretty hot here in the Southland all week long. As a truck driver in these parts, a January heat wave isn’t unusual, however, can still creep up and cost some serious fuel bucks whent the mercury creeps into the 80s. Extreme heat can lead to blown tires or melted rubber parts under the hood. Take this month to do an ‘extreme weather’ check up on your vehicle to make sure all components are as they should be (and prepared for that next cold front!)

Safety first! That’s what we hear all the time anyway, however, Volvo represents that mantra to the fullest extent. No matter what Volvo puts on the market, you can guarantee safety will be one of the top five marketing pitches. This time around though – Volvo is looking beyond the plant and onto the road. Gotta’ fleet wth a good track record? Listen up!
It was just announced that Volvo Trucks North America will award $25,000 each to the two fleets with the best driving records. Volvo will create additional safety programs for those fleets – so the safety continues.
The Trucker interviewed Volvo’s Scott Kress, senior vice president/sales and marketing who said, “Safety is Volvo Trucks’ bedrock value. It has been our No. 1 one priority since the very founding of Volvo more than 80 years ago and it guides virtually all product decisions we make. Many of our customers share this passion and invest their time and resources to achieve safe operations in their fleets. The Volvo Trucks Safety Award is a way to recognize fleets with truly superior safety programs and records, and to encourage others to emulate them,” (www.thetrucker.com.)
How is “safety” being assessed amongst the thousands of eligible fleets? Well – that will be up to the U.S. Department of Transportation and its definition of a “recordable accident.” That definition, as written by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is as follows, “Section 390.5 defines “accident” as an occurrence involving a commercial motor vehicle operating on a highway in interstate or intrastate commerce which results in a fatality; bodily injury to a person who, as a result of the injury, immediately receives medical treatment away from the scene of the accident; or one or more motor vehicles incurring disabling damage as a result of the accident, requiring the motor vehicles to be transported away from the scene by a tow truck or other motor vehicle. It excludes occurrences involving only boarding and alighting from a stationary motor vehicle or involving only the loading or unloading of cargo.” (http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/rules-regulations/administration/rulemakings/notices/E7-14092-Recording-of-CMV-Accidents-Involving-Fires-7-24-07.htm.)

We all know economically it’s been a rough year. And if there’s anything than can mirror the state of the economy, it’s the Port of Long Beach. The second busiest port in the nation, the POLB has moved more than $100 billion worth of products in a single year. Everything from toy dolls to building lumber finds its way through the busy Long Beach waters. The demand for that same ‘everything’ we speak of though has slowed in the past two years. The POLB recently released report details how the economy – both nationally and internationally, has affected day to day business at the docks.
According to the POLB’s website, “Container cargo shipments through the Port of Long Beach in 2008 reflected the depth of the global economic recession, dropping 11 percent compared to 2007. It was the biggest single-year decline in more than 20 years,” (http://www.polb.com).
The last time the Port saw similar numbers was 2004. The motionless real estate industry and drop in manufacturing overall have lead to a decline in the number of POLB imports.
In 2008, Logistics Management reported, “As has been the case in previous months, growth at United States-based retail container ports is still mirroring the current faltering economic situation, with weak or negative growth predicted in the coming months, according to the monthly Port Tracker report by the National Retail Federation, a retail trade association, and Global Insight, a provider of economic and financial information.” Freight has slowed not just in the US, but throughout the World. The US is so dependent on foreign manufacturing and the slowdown in US retail as undoubtedly had a trickle affect on international economies.
Despite the drop in numbers, executives at the POLB claim it remains fiscally strong. In an effort to remain strong and impact the local economy, the Port’s Executive Director Richard D. Steinke is focusing on job creation and also environmental improvements.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: You may have noticed a recent rise in diesel and gas prices. Nothing to be alarmed about - a few cents here and there, but enough nonetheless to notice. AAA reported that the average price this week is is 11.8 cents more last week and 26.8 cents more than a month ago. Why the increase in price? Blame it on the drop in crude oil prices. Unemployment fears have created projections that the demand for fue will drop as well.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Wind advisory! If you’re driving anywhere in the West right now you may have noticed it’s rather blustery. Whether you’ve dealt with the Santa Ana’s or Arctic conditions in the Pacific Northwest, strong winds can be a deterent to any driver. One of the biggest risks when driving in windy conditions is the risk of tipping over. In most cases, it’s up to other drivers to drive responsibly around big rigs in an effort to prevent the truck driver from making sudden stops or manuevers. Also - carrying cargo - and not hauling an empty trailer will help balance the vehicle’s weight making it easier to control in weather-related conditions.

Santa Ana Winds, strong arctic-influenced chills, and blustery desert gusts can cause havoc for truck drivers. Controlling any vehicle in 40-mile per hour winds is challenging, let alone hauling hundreds of thousands of cargo in an 18-foot trailer. While the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) provides up to date wind advisories (among other weather-related resources) by zip code, there’s telling when Mother Nature will really hit (think Tornados!). With that in mind, preparedness is key and can help even the most seasoned truck driver deal with windy conditions.
Consider the following scenario: It’s the middle of winter. You’re driving a long-haul route cross-country. You’ve dealt with icy roads and 30-knot winds that drop below zero degrees. The dangers are abundant: jackknifing, skidding, and ultimately, losing control.
Harsh weather is not an uncommon situation and for truck drivers, is part of the job. And when strong winds hit a trailer, it’s a whole new ballgame. The faster the truck’s speed, pressure builds up all around the trailer. Slowing down will help reduce this occurrence, however, it’s important to be cognizant of.
While wind advisories can provide fair warning of the conditions ahead, there are other signs that one can look for that provide immediate information. Andy Haraldson of Etrucker.com wrote, “High winds also often have natural warning signs: look at rising smoke and flags; they can provide good estimates of the wind’s strength and direction. Avoiding dangerous high-wind situations starts before driving the day’s first inch.
Trip planning includes knowing weather conditions not only where you are now but also where you’re going and where you’ll be at the end of the day. Moreover, weather might be fine at your destination, but that can change by the time you get there.” (www.etrucker.com)
Haradlson also noted the importance of understanding the load you’re hauling. An unstable trailer can lead to jackknifing. The amount of weight in a trailer is important, however, more weight doesn’t always equate to easier handling in the wind. Ultimately – no matter what’s being hauled, it’s up to the driver to make the safest decision and park the vehicle when necessary. When parked, professionals advise to park with the cab facing the wind, which reduces the risk of being blown over.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Start the New Year off right - check out the Environmental Protection Agency’s ‘National Clean Diesel Campaign’ for information and resources on how you can manage a cleaner fuel-burning rig. The mission: “EPA established innovative programs to accelerate emission reductions from older diesel engines to provide more immediate air quality benefits.” (epa.gov). The opportunities are abundant considering there are over 11 million diesel engines out there that do not meet EPA regulations.

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: Be in the know - it could save you time and money! As far as road closures go anyway, it’s important to know the route and in real time. Any truck driver knows weather systems can pop up in a moments notice. Fortunately there are sites that provide up to date information on interstates throughout the country. For example, www.interstate-guide.com, catalogs every Interstate highway within the Eisenhower Interstate System and breaks down each route into an individual guide to include facts, figures, photographs, and basic information. If you’re not in the know - it’s ok - others are and the information is available!

1) Safety Reminder: Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, who stated, “Safety belts each year prevent 15,700 fatalities, 350,000 serious injuries and $67 billion in costs associated with traffic injuries and deaths.”
2) Paying the Toll: Los Angeles is considering the addition of a toll lane on three major freeways that would charge drivers based on the amount of congestion on the road.
Officials here are seeking federal money to put toll lanes initially on three freeways, including the 210 and 10 in the San Gabriel Valley and the 110 south of downtown.
3) Online social sites for truck drivers: Several sites cater to truck drivers and cover topics ranging from career opportunities, safety, entertainment, industry outlook and whatever the next hot blog topic entails. Etrucker.com and Drivertrak.com are two sites created to support the truck driving community.
4) Driver’s wanted: According to the ATA, the trucking industry may see a shortage of drivers in the near future. A majority of current long haul drivers are between the ages of 35-54. In less than a decade, half of that group will likely retire from what can often be a mentally and physically draining position.
5) No Idling Here: In an effort to reduce emissions, idling big rigs are banned in states such as California and the trend is growing. It’s stop or go, on or off, restraint or - well, you get the picture. And idling truck could be a thing of the past before you know it!
6) In March, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters advocated support for the Cross-Border Truck Program, stating, “Whatever their reason, this is no time to let the politics of pessimism dim the promise of prosperity for hundreds of thousands of American drivers, growers and manufacturers. We should be looking for every chance to open new markets for our drivers, to find new buyers for our products, and encourage new consumers for our produce.”

RSI’s Gas Saving Tip of the day: New Year’s Day means a brand new resolution. If ou haven’t come up with one yet - don’t fret. The first day of the year is not over yet! With crude oil prices ending the year below $45 a barrel one might opt to do what her or she can to keep fuel costs in check. Many resolve to diet, which can be difficult when your 9-5 is spent in a truck. There are ways however to stay healthy on the road by eating lighter options avaiable even at fast food spots. Whatever you chose to commit yourself to - or even if you don’t - 2009 is fresh start no matter how you look at it.
