Despite warning devices at grade crossings, thousands of vehicles collide with trains every year.
In an effort to avoid railroad collisions:
- Take precautions when looking down parallel train tracks - the illusion of distance is heightened as the tracks converge.
- Watch for double tracks -one train may clear the crossing while another is approaching.
- Be aware that trains cannot stop quickly -a small 12-car train going 65mph will take a mile to stop.
- Approach all grade crossings with caution and be prepared to stop.
- Make sure your trailer clears the track when stopping at an interscetion.
- Avoid overdriving your headlights - do not drive faster than your ability to see and stop.
When it comes to railroad crossings, it is better to be cautious and safe rather than careless and sorry.
