An Update From The Foundation for Health Coverage Education

health professionalsA lot has happened in the last couple of months at the Foundation for Health
Coverage Education (FHCE). We are making tremendous progress to centralize
the distribution of all public programs. Here is a summary:

  • FHCE is working with several health insurance companies in California,
including Anthem Blue Cross and HealthNet, who are committed to
helping applicants who are declined individual private insurance to identify
other health coverage options. Our goal is to roll this project out
    nationally in 2009.
  • The American Cancer Society (ACS) has partnered with FHCE and is now referring uninsured callers to the U.S. Uninsured Help Line. The ACS call center receives 1.2 million calls per year.
  • Google, Inc. has agreed to support FHCE’s online advertising campaign with a donation of $10,000 per month.
  • In an effort to reduce ER visits and put a dent in the nation’s 8th largest hospital system’s annual cost of unreimbursed care, the Foundation for Health Coverage Education and Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) are instituting a multi-prong public and private low-cost health insurance enrollment effort. The primary focus of the program is to educate nearly one-third of the estimated 45 million uninsured Americans who are eligible for government plans, and help them with sign-up for coverage as they come into the hospital. FHCE has already met with 90 of CHW’s admitting managers and supervisors.
  • FHCE's participation in the Nurses Opening Day on September 2 with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) was a tremendous success. With over 650 nurses and physicians in attendance gearing up for the new school year, health coverage for the uninsured was a top priority and the LA County Health Care Options Matrix, sponsored by Anthem Blue Cross Foundation and customized by FHCE, was their solution to navigate the system. FHCE distributed 65,000 Matrixes to LAUSD.
  • FHCE welcomes our new Advisory Board: Alain Enthoven, Senator Tom McClintock and Leonard Schaeffer. Click here for a biography about each member of our advisory board.
  • Brokers across the nation, California Association of Health Underwriters (CAHU) and the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU) have been working together with FHCE in support of our efforts to educate the uninsured on health coverage options.
  • As America’s largest seller for individual health insurance policies, e-Health Insurance is providing valuable website support through a two-year partnership and referring individuals who have been declined for health insurance in all 50 states to the helpline and the CoverageForAll.org website.
  • The five-question Eligibility Quiz has been revised for California to include a simple sign-up check list and an instant application link for public programs.
  • In September 2008, FHCE set a new record month for unique visitors to the www.CoverageForAll.org website with 40,462 queries. And, the US Uninsured Help Line call center has answered over 30,955 individual phone calls. Since inception via radio, TV, website and print media, FHCE has garnered 827 million media impressions.
  • According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 1 million less uninsured Americans in 2006 than there were in 2007. According to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, there are 20% less uninsured children in the U.S. during this same time period.
